Most of the zoo animals we will get to know are mammals, so this is a great introduction. We begin our zoo animal adventures by learning all sorts of fun facts about lions and tigers. For all the cat lovers, they think it’s great to know these BIG cats are related to their cute kitty pets. We learn things like how they are carnivores, where they live in the world, what their bodies and skeletons are like, and how they like to live. It is fun to see pictures of them in the wild and trying to camouflage in their environments. We finish up our lesson by acting out the day in a life of a tiger with little plastic animals and coloring some pictures as we learn about their bodies. Story: “Mr. Tiger Goes Wild” Kindness Time: “I Miss You Mouse” (a story of love and friendship) Finger Play for this week: Tony Chestnut (Click here to watch on YouTube) Music: Walking in the Jungle Snack: Wheat Thins, apple slices, water Art: Dry Watercolors (these go in their end of year portfolios) Nursery Rhyme for this week: Rain Rain Go Away Another fun day in preschool! |

Did you know that giraffes are the tallest mammal in the world and that they sleep standing up, but only for about 2 hours total each day? I’m glad I am not a giraffe, because I couldn’t survive on only 2 hours of sleep for very long (or at least I don’t think anyone would want to hang out with me!). We also learn that giraffes are mostly in African savannas, use their spots as camouflage, a baby is a calf that is tall as a human an adult when born, they are herbivores who eat leaves from acacia trees, they make a few sounds, but human ears can’t hear most of them, and they can go for 2 weeks without drinking water – which is really good because it’s hard & dangerous to bend down low from way up there! Giraffes are pretty interesting animals. Everyone studies some great real giraffe pictures, colors one of their own, and acts out what it might feel like to be a giraffe. Then, we work on putting together students head to toe on the ground to equal one giraffe ~ about 16-18 feet. How many kids do you think it would take? You will see in our photos next weekend. :) Story: “Giraffes Can’t Dance” Kindness Time: “Mommy Do You Love Me?" Finger Play for this week: Do Your Ears Point Up? (https://youtu.be/58vFVTolcmI) Music: “I Really Love to Dance" Snack: Cheerios, apple slices, & water Art: Beautiful wet watercolor painting about an animal they like ~ will go into their year-end portfolios. How to Make Wet Watercolors: Using nice quality paper (like the one in the link below), soak the paper in a tray of water for about 10-15 minutes. Mix watercolors into water bowls or small jars (watercolor paint by Stockmar below). Prepare a jar of clean water, a small towel, a board to paint on, and a thick paintbrush. Put soaked paper onto painting board and allow child to paint with mixed watercolor paint. Be sure to have them "give their paintbrush a bath" in the water in between colors and dry off on the towel. We like to play some solo piano music or similar during the painting activity. It is such a relaxing and therapeutic art method! And the paintings can turn out so beautiful! 6TH DAY OF ZANY ZOOS (MARCH) ~ ELEPHANTS
3 Day Class Circle & Handwriting Time: Sight Word: “can” Math: graphing a pictograph of different kinds of shoes kids like/have Spanish: hombros/shoulders Numbers: 21-30 (building) Review letter: Ww Handwriting: letter w and 26-30 Share bags are Ww for Monday 2 Day Class Circle & Handwriting Time: Math: graphing a pictograph of different kinds of shoes kids like/have Spanish: hombros/shoulders Numbers: 11-20 (sequencing) Build number: 9 Review letter: Uu Handwriting: letter U and 9 Science: All about elephants. While giraffes are the tallest animals, elephants are the biggest overall land animals. (We get to see some fun photos of just how big they are.) They usually live where it is very hot such as in the grasslands of Africa and the tropical forests of India (we find this on our globe). Elephants need different ways to stay cool in these very hot conditions. One way is through their extra-wrinkly, baggy skin. More skin means more pores for heat to escape through. Everyone gets to experience this by seeing how if you take a big piece of tinfoil and scrunch it all up, it can cover your arm with a lot of extra material. They can also cool themselves down with their very own personal fans – their big ears. Elephants have 2 big ears and they can use them to fan themselves. The kids get to experience this with some big paper “ears” on popsicle sticks. Maybe you need an “elephant ear fan” the next time you are out watching a hot soccer or baseball game – ha! Elephants also like to go swimming to cool down and have their own personal snorkel – their trunk! We get to act out swimming with a long trunk to breath through. We also learn how the long white parts on an elephant are called tusks. Some other fun facts: elephants live in a group called a herd with the oldest and wisest girl elephant as the leader, they can make some sounds human ears cannot hear, a baby is called a calf, a mom is a cow, and a dad is a bull. They use their long trunk to breath and to pick up water and food. Elephants are herbivores (eat only plants) that usually eat roots, grass, leaves, fruit, and bark. Since they are so very big, they spend much of their day eating. Everyone has fun using kid chopsticks like a trunk and colorful pom-poms to represent the “food” to pretend to feed themselves from a tray to a bowl. Story: “Little Nelly’s Big Book" Kindness Time: “Love Monster & the Perfect Present” - the best gifts are just made from love Finger Play for this week: Do Your Ears Point Up? (https://youtu.be/58vFVTolcmI) Music: Willoughby Wallaby Woo by Raffi (while using rhythm sticks) Snack: Cheerios, orange slices, & water Art: Each kids makes a cute elephant head with a paper plate, pink crayons, gray paper pieces, and google eyes Nursery Rhyme for this week: Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, Turn Around Another fun day in preschool! Science: All About Kangaroos
Kangaroos are super fun and usually really cute animals. They are only found in Australia and the surrounding islands (we find it on our globe). They live in forests, woodlands, and fields. Kangaroos are herbivores and only eat grass and other plants. They come in many different sizes and can be small enough to fit in your hand, or as big as an adult person.
Baby kangaroos are called Joeys. After they are born, they crawl into their mom’s pouch and stay there for up to a whole year. This is what a marsupial is. We see some fun pictures of all the above information. Then, we get to act out how a kangaroo moves: by either walking slowly on all four legs or by hopping quickly on two legs. We get to see how big their back leg bones are on a skeleton. These big leg bones allow for kangaroos to be able to hope up to 3 times their own height and even longer than that distance.
Finally, we take turns seeing how high and far everyone can jump. We measure the distances with our tape measure for more measuring practice, too.

3 Day Class Circle Time & Handwriting:
Sight Word: “here”
Spanish: orejas/ears
Math: make a pie graph with different types of pizza people like (perfect pie graph example)
Numbers: 11-20 (building)
Learn word family: “an” with ran, fan, man, pan, van
Handwriting: “an” words and 16-20
Science: We finish up our animal topic with bunny rabbits! They probably aren’t an animal you picture when you think about the zoo, but they sure are cute and we will be thinking of them more with spring and Easter.
Did you know a rabbit’s teeth never stop growing?! That’s right – but they wear them down with all the eating they do all do so they don’t get way too long. (We see a fun picture of a rabbit’s teeth.)
Rabbit’s are herbivores. By now, most of my friends know what that means. This means they eat only plants, no meat. Rabbits eat mostly grass and leaves, but they also will have some fruits and vegetables. (We see examples of what they eat.)
Girl rabbits are called “does,” male rabbits are called “bucks,” and baby rabbits are called “kittens.” No, they are not small cats – it’s just what scientists have named them! (We see a fun picture of a rabbit family.)
Rabbits have sharp eyesight and amazing hearing. They can use their big ears to stick up amongst the blades of grass to listen for danger while they keep the rest of their body safe. We use some wood rhythm sticks to be our rabbit “ears” and duck down below the table with our “ears” sticking up to imagine how helpful tall ears could be in a field. Their ears are also like elephant ears because they can use them to help stay cool. Their eyesight is extra good because their eyes are on the sides of their heads so they are able to see in more directions at once. This is something human mommies could use! Try putting round “eyes” on the sides of your head, and imagine how much more you could see at once. (We also see some pictures of rabbit ears and eyes.)
Rabbit’s also use their big rear feet in case of danger. They have big back feet, and they can use these like drums to make a warning sound to other rabbits. Let’s all pretend to be rabbits and thump the ground for a second.
Then we look at the bones of a rabbit. In class, we have fun putting together a rabbit skeleton like a little puzzle to help us see all the bones better.
Since the rabbits have such big back feet and strong back legs, they are able to jump really far. Some rabbits can jump 3 meters. That is amazing with their little bodies.
We end with learning a little rhyme about rabbits and testing out how far all the preschoolers can jump next to a tape measure set to 3 meters. Some really good jumpers can almost get halfway there.
Rabbit rhyme:
I am a Little Bunny (Act It Out):
I am a little bunny.
Eyes on the sides of my head.
I see to the left and right,
Behind me and ahead.
I am a little bunny,
These are my very long ears.
They help me hear many sounds,
I can hear from far and near.
I am a little bunny,
My strong legs are for jumping.
Warning others of danger,
I use my feet for thumping.
I am a mother bunny,
With a white and fluffy tail.
I lift it up into the air,
Babies now follow my trail.
Story: “Corduroy at the Zoo”
Finger Play for this week: Beehive

Warning others of danger,
I use my feet for thumping.
I am a mother bunny,
With a white and fluffy tail.
I lift it up into the air,
Babies now follow my trail.
