Hi! I am the founder & owner of You Are My Sunshine! I am so excited to share this magical place with our community where children can develop a love of learning through hands-on, exciting, science and nature-based activities. Growing up, I had so many amazing teachers who helped me grow to love learning- and I love passing on that wonderful experience to the children in our community. I grew up with a mother that was a fabulous preschool teacher and was always inspired by how she made her classes so fun.
Back in 8th grade, I had a really great science teacher - Mrs. Pittman (I still remember her name!), who turned me on to science. She made class so fun that I have loved science ever since! I have always wanted to pass on that love to others and I love to show kids of all ages how fun science can be.
As I explored preschools for my first child, I saw a need for a great balanced preschool program that was just a few hours a few days per week, included cooperative, creative playtime - but was not just like a playgroup, introduced important academic skills to children - but did not force them to do boring worksheets, included fun music and movement each day, and had a lot of creative art experiences! I also thought class sizes should be small enough so everyone could get plenty of attention from the teachers. From these ideas, my preschool was born! Our parents tell us they are so amazed by how much their kids learn through fun and games!
I am a mom to three incredible, unique children and a Credentialed California Teacher. I spent most of my younger years working with children in some capacity - gymnastics/ice skating teacher, camp counselor, summer girl, after school tutor, etc. After college, first I was a scientist researching cancer-related mechanisms with a Masters in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from UC Davis, but ultimately decided to follow my love for children. I earned my teaching credential, and taught science for several years in the public school system before having my own children. This new pathway allows me to integrate my love for science and children together.
Every day I love watching children discover the world all around them, and follow their curiosity. What better way to explore the world around you than through nature and science? I love to watch the children grow and blossom and go off very well-prepared for Kindergarten and beyond!
Now, I am super excited to also share my award winning program with families all around the world! I have spent many, many years testing and developing my curriculum and now know what really works. By using my proven curriculum, you get to skip all the trial and error process and skip to the good stuff. After all, kids grow up fast, so we don't really have time to waste!
